The simple ROI calculation

The return from a tractor remap is almost entirely driven by fuel savings. The calculation is straightforward:

Annual fuel saving (£) = Consumption (litres/hour) × saving % × annual hours × fuel price (£/litre)

Payback period (months) = Remap cost (£) ÷ (Annual saving ÷ 12)

Once you know your tractor's average fuel consumption and annual hours, the rest follows directly.

Worked example: 150hp arable tractor

Tractor: 150hp tractor (e.g. New Holland T6.165, MF6S.155, JD 6155R or equivalent)Fuel consumption: 12 litres per hour (typical for medium arable tractor in cultivation)Saving: 10% (conservative end of 8–15% range)Annual hours: 600Red diesel price: £0.90/litre

Annual fuel saving: 12 × 0.10 × 600 × £0.90 = £648 per year

Illustrative remap cost: £350–500. Payback: 6–9 months.

Remaining tractor working life of 5 years: total fuel saving £3,240. Net return after remap cost: £2,740–2,890.

Worked example: 250hp cultivation tractor

Tractor: 250hp cultivation tractor (e.g. JD 7270R, NH T7.245, Case IH Optum 270 or equivalent)Fuel consumption: 20 litres per hour (typical for large tractor in heavy cultivation)Saving: 12%Annual hours: 800Red diesel price: £0.90/litre

Annual fuel saving: 20 × 0.12 × 800 × £0.90 = £1,728 per year

Payback: 3–4 months at typical remap prices.

5-year total saving: £8,640. At this size, the remap is one of the highest-return farm investments available.

Fleet ROI — the case for remapping all tractors

Every tractor in a fleet saves independently. The fleet saving is the sum of all individual savings.

Example mixed farm fleet (5 tractors):120hp tractor, 8 litres/hour, 400 hours, 10% = £288/year150hp tractor, 12 litres/hour, 600 hours, 10% = £648/year200hp tractor, 16 litres/hour, 700 hours, 10% = £1,008/year250hp tractor, 20 litres/hour, 800 hours, 12% = £1,728/year320hp tractor, 26 litres/hour, 900 hours, 12% = £2,527/year

Total fleet annual saving: £6,199

Fleet remap pricing for all 5 tractors in a single farm visit reduces the per-machine cost, improving the ROI further.

Other financial benefits beyond fuel

Reduced downtime from emissions system fixes: If we resolve Adblue or DPF faults at the same visit, the cost of prevented downtime — particularly at harvest or during the silage window — can equal or exceed the fuel saving in value.

Better productivity: More torque means faster field work — more area cultivated per day, more bales per hour, faster cycle times on loader work. Hard to quantify exactly but real.

Better resale value: A well-maintained tractor with documented service history, including a specialist remap, can be perceived positively by buyers familiar with the practice.

Common Questions

How accurate are the ROI projections?

The projections are based on typical fuel savings from tractors we remap. Individual results vary based on tractor condition, duty cycle, and operator style. We give specific projections for named tractors and realistic annual hours when you enquire.

Is the ROI better on high or low utilisation tractors?

Higher-utilisation tractors realise the fuel saving faster — shorter payback period and larger total return over the remaining working life. Low-utilisation tractors still benefit but the payback takes longer.

Can you provide a written ROI projection for my farm?

Yes — we provide fuel saving projections for named tractors based on the consumption data and annual hours you supply. Useful for farm business planning and for justifying the investment.

Does the ROI change if red diesel prices change?

Yes — higher red diesel prices increase the annual saving proportionally, shortening the payback period. The remap becomes even more cost-effective as fuel prices rise.

Should I remap a tractor I'm planning to sell soon?

A remap on a tractor you plan to sell in 6 months may not pay back in fuel saving alone. However, the remap can be presented to the buyer as a feature. We advise honestly on whether remapping makes sense given your timeline.
