The groundworks contractor's plant challenge
Groundworks contractors face tighter margins than most construction disciplines. Plant is the biggest cost line — fuel, hire, and downtime all eat into project profitability. For owner-operators and groundworks companies with their own plant fleet, managing plant costs is directly linked to project margin.
The machines that dominate groundworks plant lists — 8-20 tonne excavators, dump trucks or articulated dumpers, vibratory rollers, and telehandlers — are exactly the machines that benefit most significantly from ECU remapping. Regular, repetitive work at sustained load is where fuel savings are most consistent.
Which groundworks plant benefits most from remapping
Excavators: The workhorse of groundworks. A 13-tonne excavator digging foundations and loading out is the most common machine on a groundworks site, and the most consistent performer for fuel saving from a remap. 8–12% saving on fuel consumption, more digging torque in hard ground, faster cycle times.
Dumpers and articulated dump trucks: Site dumpers (Terex, JCB, Thwaites) and articulated dump trucks moving spoil on larger groundworks contracts burn serious diesel. The round-trip haul cycle — loaded out, empty return — is well-suited to remapping efficiency gains.
Vibratory rollers and compactors: Used on every groundworks project for subbase and backfill compaction. Fuel saving from remapping is proportional to utilisation — a roller working every day saves meaningfully over a year.
Telehandlers: Present on most groundworks sites for pipe handling, manhole lifting, and materials placing. The JCB 540-170 and similar machines benefit from improved lift response and fuel economy.
Adblue and DPF downtime on groundworks sites
Groundworks contractors know the particular frustration of Adblue and DPF faults — they always seem to happen on the most time-critical day of the project. A machine going into reduced power mode or refusing to restart when you are trying to backfill a trench before rain is a very expensive problem.
Modern groundworks plant is increasingly equipped with Adblue and DPF systems. Excavators built after 2015–2019 (depending on engine power) are Stage V compliant and fitted with SCR. These systems cause downtime on site.
We address Adblue and DPF faults at the same visit as the remap — resolving the immediate fault and optimising the calibration to reduce the frequency of future issues.
Fleet pricing for groundworks companies
Groundworks companies with their own plant fleet benefit significantly from fleet remapping. A company running 3–5 excavators, 2–3 dumpers, and a roller or compactor has a meaningful fuel saving from remapping the entire fleet — and the fleet pricing makes the per-machine cost very competitive.
We attend site and work through the fleet in a planned visit. For a company based in Wales or the South West, the travel cost is modest relative to the fleet saving.

Common Questions
Is plant remapping suitable for owner-operator groundworks businesses?
Yes — even a single excavator and dumper remapped pays back quickly for an owner-operator in regular use. The per-machine cost is manageable and the fuel saving is immediate.
Can you remap excavators being used in hard ground for drainage work?
Yes — drainage and groundworks excavators working in clay, rock, or mixed ground benefit significantly from increased low-end torque. Hard ground is where the remap's extra digging power is most useful.
Do you cover site dumpers as well as articulated dump trucks?
Yes — diesel-engined site dumpers from JCB, Terex, Thwaites, and other manufacturers are within our capability where ECU access is available. Tell us the make and model when you enquire.
How do we schedule a fleet visit around project commitments?
We work around your site schedule. Plant at the end of a day's work, machines available for an early morning start before the workforce arrives, or any other timing that fits your project programme.
What if we have machines from multiple manufacturers?
That is the norm for a groundworks company. We cover all major manufacturers — Cat, Komatsu, Volvo, JCB, Doosan, and more. The brand mix does not affect our ability to remap the fleet.
